Floating Goose Decoys

If you’re hunting geese on the water, floating goose decoys are the way to go. Available in standard floater positions or butt up in a feeder pose, floating goose decoys make your water spread welcoming to all who fly by looking for a place to rest. Since geese can be very particular, it's important to set out a realistic-looking spread of floater decoys in natural positions. The quality of a good decoy is more important than the quantity, so choose floaters that rest on the water and add a couple of standing goose full bodies and sleepers near the shoreline. If you set out a hundred floating decoys, use a goose call to make the noise of a real flock. Stock your collection with the best floating goose decoys that mimic the most common water species, including specklebellies, blue goose, snow goose, and Canada geese, to make your hunt more enjoyable.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many floating goose decoys do you need?

Use anywhere from a dozen to 100 floating goose decoys in a water spread. During migration season, upwards of 150 decoys is not unreasonable.

How do you set up a floating goose decoy?

One of the most tried-and-true setups for floating goose decoys is a J spread, also called a fishhook, but the U shape can be just as effective. Both shapes target Canada geese, but can also attract snow or specklebellies if they are in the vicinity. Set the bottom curve of the J or U at the bank end of the water with the wind parallel to the bank. Geese will land in the pocket along the inside of the bend, so place your blind in the middle of this area for the best shot. Don’t set up your goose floater decoy spread close to trees or tall cover. Geese avoid tall objects when they circle and they might not land with these obstructions in the flight path.

Who makes a lightweight floating goose decoy?

Lightweight floating goose decoys are made in either EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) foam or polyethylene plastic. Goose floater decoys constructed in EVA foam are not only lightweight, they’re quiet and virtually sink-proof. HEYDAY makes lightweight EVA foam decoys.

Polyethylene plastic floating goose decoys from GHG are lightweight and durable, and they also come in an assortment of realistic designs that draw in geese and make them feel more comfortable.
